Jacob
Alone and in the dark
I prickle with dis-ease.
And suddenly
I'm grappled by an unseen foe.
We wrestle and thrash
Churning, straining,
twirling in our death dance.
Can anyone see God and live?
Not Jacob.
He died that day.
But I,
Israel,
the contender,
emerge from the womb of the dawn,
and limp into the new day
crowned with commanded blessing.
